Business Ethics & Legal Ethics: A Comparison for the JD Seeking a Pivot to Business – Compliance Career Paths

This one-hour virtual event will delve into the similarities and differences between legal and business ethics. The goal is to educate JDs considering, or committed, to pivoting from law to a nonlegal business career.

Which ethical paradigms align with Corporate America and what does one need to learn? We will also explore career paths in Corporate Compliance and Ethics.

A three-time CEO and three-time board member, David Greenberg serves as Chair of the Governance and Risk Assessment Committee and a member of the Audit Committee of International Seaways (NYSE: INSW), one of the largest global crude oil and petroleum tanker companies. He is partner in a small private equity firm and oversees its majority investment in Blacksford LLC, a premium RV rental company in the mountain west. Greenberg is also a co- founder and board member of AdventureGenie Inc., the first AI-powered travel planning application for RV and camping trips.

In January 2020, Greenberg was asked by the Board of Directors to step in and lead LRN Corporation through a transition to a new CEO. LRN is a technology and education company that provides ethics and compliance strategy, education, communications, and a technology platform to corporations across the globe.

From 1988 to 2008, Mr. Greenberg served in C-Suite positions overseeing compliance, government affairs, communications and strategy at Altria Group, Inc. – then the parent company of Philip Morris, Kraft Foods and Miller Brewing. Earlier in his career, Mr. Greenberg was a partner in the law firm Arnold & Porter. He attended Williams College and received JD/MBA degrees from the University of Chicago Law School and Booth School of Business.

Greenberg has testified before the U.S. Congress, the European Commission and Parliament, the Israeli Knesset and other governmental bodies over two dozen times and has appeared on ABC Nightline, the CBS Morning News, BBC Morning, and the PBS News Hour

Markus Hartmann

Markus Hartmann is the General Counsel for Mister Car Wash (NYSE: MCW), the largest car wash operator in North America, with over 475 locations nationwide and headquartered in Tucson, Arizona.

Before joining Mister Car Wash, Markus held senior legal and compliance roles with pharmaceutical, technology, and consumer products companies, including serving as the General Counsel for Carrols Restaurant Group (NASDAQ: TAST) and as the Technical Compliance Officer for Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America, Inc.

Before his legal career, Markus served as a helicopter pilot in the United States Marine Corps and flew in Desert Shield/Storm, and after law school, he continued his service in the Marine Corps Reserves as a judge advocate, ultimately retiring at the rank of Colonel after over 30 years of service.

Markus holds a bachelor’s degree from Colorado College, a law degree from Harvard Law School, and an M.B.A. from Le Moyne College.

Tiffany Archer

Tiffany is the former Global Head of Compliance, Risk and Privacy for Pall Corporation (a Danaher Corporation subsidiary). Before joining Pall, she served as Regional Ethics & Compliance Officer and Corporate Counsel (Americas & Europe) for Panasonic Avionics Corporation. She played an integral role supporting the successful completion of its 3-year FCPA monitorship. She has vast experience representing multinationals before U.S. regulators, including the SEC and DOJ, as well as Federal Monitors.

She has over two decades of experience in Fortune 500 companies, AmLaw 100 global law firms, and as in-house counsel. Her responsibilities have encompassed overseeing global initiatives across Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Europe and the Middle East regions, focusing on ethics and compliance, bribery, corruption, internal investigations, global trade compliance, financial crimes, and more.

Tiffany currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at Fordham Law School. She is also an instructor for the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE), contributing to the training and development of compliance professionals. In addition, she is the Co-chair of the New York City Bar Association’s (NYCBA) Task Force on Behavioral Science & Digital Technologies and former NYCBA Compliance Committee Secretary.

In 2023, she was recognized as “50 Women to Watch” by the Corporate Counsel Business Journal, acknowledging her substantial contributions to the legal field. Previously, in 2020, she was a finalist for Compliance Week’s “Excellence in Compliance Award for Anti-Corruption” and was also featured in Modern Counsel magazine, emphasizing her leadership and influence within the compliance sector. Tiffany serves as a board and executive advisor, contributing her insights and experience to strategic decision-making.

Tiffany holds a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and a JD from The George Washington University Law School.

Adam Turtletaub

Adam Turteltaub is the Chief Engagement & Strategy Officer for the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics & Health Care Compliance Association. He joined SCCE with more than 7 years of experience working with ethics and compliance professionals.

Immediately prior to joining the SCCE/HCCA, Adam was Corporate Relations Executive for LRN where he was responsible for the company’s conferences and events programs.

Adam is a regular speaker at the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics’ and Health Care Compliance Association’s events, as well as conferences for a number of other organizations.

Adam’s professional career includes thirteen years in advertising and marketing. He began at J. Walter Thompson, where he was a part of the company’s management training program. During his advertising career Adam worked on such national brands as Burger King, Nintendo, Vittel Mineral Water and Wisk.

Before his time in advertising Adam served for two years on the Washington staff of Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

Adam also has an extensive writing background. He was a part of the founding editorial team for Excite. In addition, he has contributed articles to several magazines and wrote a chapter of We’ll Never Be Young Again, a look back at the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Bart M. Schwartz

Described by The New York Times as the person “often sought out in…thorny situations,” Bart M. Schwartz is a founder and the chairman of Guidepost Solutions, where he provides compliance, ethics, and integrity monitoring and investigative services. He is a former Chief of the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

For more than 30 years, Mr. Schwartz has managed sensitive and complex matters for a wide array of clients, including government agencies, international corporations, and not-for-profits. He served as chairman of the Compliance Committee and a member of the Audit Committee of the board of HMS Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ:HMSY). He served as the first chairman of the Board of the public biopharma company KADMON. He also serves on the Board of Directors for philanthropic organizations, including the Police Athletic League of New York City where he is President, as well as the Stuyvesant High School Alumni Board of Directors.

Mr. Schwartz served as the federal monitor for five years over the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA).

Mr. Schwartz recently served as a senior member of the Guidepost team assisting the University of Michigan with implementing recommended remediation efforts in the aftermath of sexual harassment charges.

Mr. Schwartz was appointed receiver of two Madoff feeder funds with assets of $1.2 billion and succeeded in distributing $2 billion to the victims through fund management, investments to preserve value, and litigation.

Mr. Schwartz is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions. Crain’s New York named him a 2023 Notable Nonprofit Board Leader and Compliance Week recognized him with its Excellence in Compliance Award. He is also on City & State New York’s 2021, 2022, and 2023 Law Power 100 list, and 2023 50 Over 50 Age Disruptors list, and the National Law Journal’s Trailblazers in Crisis Communications. In 2022, The American Lawyer named Mr. Schwartz a Top-Rated Lawyer.
